Tyres are the only part of your vehicle that make contact with the road, yet they are often overlooked until a puncture or worn tread becomes obvious. Regular tyre inspections are an important part of vehicle maintenance and can help identify problems before they affect safety, fuel economy or handling.

At Aitken Bros Autos, tyres are inspected during every service, and customers are advised when tyre replacement is becoming necessary. This allows vehicle owners to plan ahead rather than being surprised by an unroadworthy tyre or an inconvenient breakdown. What Should Be Checked During a Tyre Inspection? A tyre inspection involves more than measuring tread depth. Tyres should also be checked for: Uneven or rapid tread wear Punctures or previous repairs Cracks, cuts and rubber deterioration Bulges or signs of internal damage Delamination or separation of tyre layers Incorrect tyre pressures Damage from impacts with potholes or rough roads Delaying vehicle servicing can mean these issues go unnoticed for longer, increasing the risk of reduced tyre life or tyre failure. Tyres Age Even When You Aren't Driving Many drivers are surprised to learn that tyres have a date of manufacture. Over time, rubber naturally hardens and deteriorates due to age, sunlight, temperature changes and general use.

As an industry guide, many tyres begin to warrant closer inspection once they reach around 7 to 8 years of age, with tyres approaching 10 years often considered unsuitable for continued road use, depending on their quality, storage conditions, usage and overall condition.

Vehicles that spend long periods parked, travel on rough rural roads or experience temperature extremes may place additional stress on tyre rubber. Wheel Alignments and Balancing Matter Wheel alignments and wheel balancing can help extend tyre life by reducing uneven wear and improving vehicle handling. Suspension wear, potholes, kerb impacts and everyday driving can gradually alter wheel alignment without the driver noticing.

Tyre inspections are particularly important before long-distance travel. Don't forget the spare tyre either — an unused spare can still deteriorate with age and should be checked regularly. Tyres for Passenger Vehicles and 4WDs Whether you drive a family car, SUV, ute or 4WD, Aitken Bros Autos offers tyre and wheel packages for passenger vehicles and four-wheel drives. The team can help select tyres suited to your driving conditions, vehicle requirements and budget.

A tyre can look perfectly acceptable from the outside while age-related deterioration is occurring internally. This is why checking tyre age and condition can be just as important as checking tread depth. Tyre Inspection and Age FAQs How often should tyres be inspected? Tyres should be checked regularly and inspected during scheduled servicing. Aitken Bros Autos checks tyre condition at every service. Do tyres expire? Tyres don't have a fixed expiry date, but age affects rubber condition. Older tyres should be inspected carefully, even if tread depth appears acceptable. How do I find the age of my tyres? The tyre sidewall includes a date code showing when the tyre was manufactured. Your technician can help identify and interpret this code. What causes uneven tyre wear? Incorrect tyre pressures, poor wheel alignment, worn suspension components or wheel balancing issues can all contribute to uneven wear. Do tyres wear out even if I don't drive much? Yes. Tyres can age and deteriorate over time due to heat, sunlight and environmental exposure. Should I check my spare tyre before travelling? Absolutely. A spare tyre should be inspected for pressure, condition and age before long trips. Spare tyres can deteriorate over time, even if they have seen little use. Can wheel alignment extend tyre life? Yes. Correct alignment and balancing can reduce uneven wear, help maximise tyre lifespan, improve tyre wear, handling and driving comfort. For tyre inspections, wheel alignments, balancing and tyre replacement advice, contact Aitken Bros Autos in Terang. As an independently owned Repco Authorised Service centre member, the team can help keep your tyres in sound condition and ready for everyday driving or your next long-distance trip.

Engines that operate through internal combustion rely on large amounts of clean air to ensure the fuel burns properly and generates the power needed to drive the vehicle. At Aitken Bros Autos in Terang, we understand how vital it is to keep your car's air filter in good condition as part of protecting your engine's health. Your engine requires extremely clean air to function efficiently. Dirt, dust, and other particles entering the engine can cause serious damage. That’s where the air filter comes into play. It ensures the air entering the combustion chambers is clean, shielding key engine components such as the pistons and cylinders from wear and damage. Why Replace Your Air Filter? Save on Fuel Costs: Your engine requires the correct balance of fuel and air to run efficiently. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing your engine to run inefficiently – often referred to as ‘running rich.’ This not only puts additional stress on your engine but can also increase fuel consumption by up to 10%. No one likes spending more on petrol than necessary! Protect Your Engine: Over time, air filters become clogged and weaker, increasing the risk of damage. A damaged or overly dirty air filter can allow harmful particles to enter the engine, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Benefits of Replacing Your Air Filter: Extends the life of your engine Improves fuel efficiency Reduces vehicle emissions At Aitken Bros Autos, we always check the condition of your air filter during every full car service. Whether it’s a major or minor service, or one that follows your manufacturer’s handbook or logbook guidelines, you can trust us to keep your engine running smoothly.

Keep your engine healthy with clean air filters. Improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and extend engine life. Visit Aitken Bros Autos for expert maintenance and reliable car servicing.

As an independently owned Repco Authorised Service centre, we have access to quality products, technical information and nationwide support while continuing to provide the friendly, local service our customers value. What Does a Car Battery Actually Do? Many people think a battery's only job is to start the engine. While that's certainly its primary role, modern vehicle batteries do much more.

Your battery supplies electrical power to: The starter motor Engine management systems Vehicle computers and sensors Lights and accessories Safety systems such as ABS and stability control Infotainment and navigation systems Power windows, locks and seats Once the engine is running, the alternator recharges the battery and supplies power to the vehicle's electrical systems. However, without a healthy battery, many of these systems may not operate correctly. Not All Car Batteries Are the Same Modern vehicles require different battery technologies depending on their design and electrical demands. Standard Flooded Batteries: These are commonly fitted to many conventional passenger vehicles and provide reliable starting power for everyday driving.

EFB Batteries (Enhanced Flooded Batteries): EFB batteries are designed for vehicles with basic stop-start technology and increased electrical demands.

AGM Batteries (Absorbent Glass Mat): AGM batteries are commonly used in modern vehicles with advanced stop-start systems, numerous electronic features and higher power requirements. They offer improved durability and faster recharge capability.

Batteries for 4WDs, SUVs and Commercial Vehicles: Larger vehicles often require batteries with higher cold-cranking performance and reserve capacity to support additional accessories, towing equipment, lighting systems and off-road applications.

Fitting the wrong battery type can affect vehicle performance, charging efficiency and battery lifespan. That's why professional battery selection is important. How Cold Weather Affects Your Car Battery Many battery failures occur during colder months, often catching drivers by surprise.

Cold temperatures slow the chemical reactions occurring inside the battery, reducing its ability to produce power. At the same time, your engine requires more effort to start because engine oil becomes thicker and internal components create more resistance.

This means your battery is working harder while delivering less power.

In areas around Terang, cooler winter mornings can place additional strain on ageing batteries, particularly those already showing signs of wear. A battery that performs adequately during summer may struggle once temperatures drop. A Simple Rule of Thumb If your battery is more than three years old, regular testing becomes increasingly important. Many batteries begin to lose performance gradually, often without obvious warning signs. Common Signs Your Battery May Be Failing Battery problems don't always result in an immediate no-start situation. In many cases, warning signs appear weeks or months beforehand.

If you notice any of these symptoms, having the battery tested can help identify the issue before it worsens.

Watch for: Slow engine cranking when starting Clicking sounds during start-up Dimming headlights Dashboard warning lights Electrical accessories operating sluggishly Stop-start systems no longer functioning correctly Intermittent starting problems Needing jump-starts more frequently What Other Vehicle Systems Can Be Affected? A weak battery can create problems beyond simply starting the engine.

Modern vehicles rely heavily on stable voltage. When battery performance deteriorates, it may affect: Engine management systems Fuel injection operation Stop-start systems Electronic steering systems Vehicle safety features Air conditioning controls Communication modules and sensors In some cases, low battery voltage can trigger warning lights or fault codes that appear unrelated to the battery itself. The Benefits of Regular Battery Testing Battery testing is a quick and effective way to assess battery health before failure occurs.

Benefits include: Reduced risk of unexpected breakdowns Early identification of weakening batteries Improved reliability during winter Verification of charging system performance Protection of sensitive vehicle electronics Greater confidence for long-distance travel At Aitken Bros Autos, we offer free battery testing to help drivers stay ahead of potential problems. Did you know that a modern vehicle may contain over 50 electronic control modules, all relying on a stable electrical supply?

As vehicles become increasingly sophisticated, battery condition plays a larger role in overall vehicle reliability than ever before. What was once a simple starting component has become a critical part of your vehicle's entire electrical network. Car Battery FAQs How often should I have my battery tested? Once your battery reaches three years of age, annual testing is recommended. More frequent testing may be beneficial before winter or long road trips. Can a battery fail without warning? Yes. While many batteries show warning signs, some can deteriorate rapidly and fail unexpectedly, particularly during colder weather. Why are AGM batteries more expensive? AGM batteries use more advanced construction and materials, offering greater durability, improved cycling capability and support for modern stop-start systems. Does short-distance driving affect battery life? Yes. Frequent short trips may not allow the alternator enough time to fully recharge the battery, potentially reducing battery lifespan over time. Can a faulty alternator damage a battery? Absolutely. An undercharging or overcharging alternator can significantly shorten battery life and affect vehicle performance. Is battery testing included during servicing? Battery testing can be performed during routine maintenance and is an excellent way to monitor battery condition as part of preventative vehicle care.
